The Leaf

Once upon a late autumn day

I ventured out on my favorite trail

I came to my pondering boulder

To reflect on why I felt so frail

I sat determined to finally be rid of him

To free my mind of adoration on hold

When my eyes discovered a leaf so orange

Gently rustling in the November cold

The leaf depicted he who imprisoned me

Who left me hoping against hope

And now it’s time to let it go

In this process I used to cope

The river current ran fast and strong

In a southern direction under clouds so grey

I held the leaf and said good-bye

And wished away his hold on my every day

I released the leaf into the surging water

And watched it move swiftly along

After a steady course, it ambled to a stop

I stared as I wondered what went wrong

My heart skipped as I watched in dismay

That orange leaf come back towards me

Defying logic and the physics of flow

It drifted back ever so gently

The leaf perched itself next to my boulder

As I sat bewildered of how this could be

I waited for a spell to watch it go

But it remained steadfast right beside me

Now I must choose how to navigate the current

With his impact on my fragile little heart

Forever stuck and never retreating

Like the orange leaf that will never part
