The Knight at the Gate
The Knight at the Gate
Once thrown into hell by three men,
Accused me of trifles and lies.
The game began as they foretold;
They begged and borrowed Lucifer’s money.
They bargaining their way out if they won,
Blind to Lucifer’s cruel jest,
Throwing them deeper in debt with every deal.
They were all in hell,
For when single kin fell in
Sometime not so long ago
So did his whole family lineage.
The Patriarch died in feigned despair,
Too weak to close the heavy door after he stole the gold.
The gold cursed with a debt unpaid.
For thirty years of torture, paying my way out,
Not knowing why he was following me.
As I matured, I learned:
He came marauding me,
Not saying a word, but terrifying me.
I started to earn, and he said, "Pay your way."
I learned.
Told: to throw the accuser back into hell you will need
Ten witnesses standing with you,
Paid the price of 3,000 purest gold coin.
The Knight stands guard across the path,
Until his silver palms are full.
Even though God might grant you grace,
The Knight demands his heavy fee;
He fills his purse, he turns the lock,
And bows to set the captive free.
He wishes health, wealth, and happiness to you.
The Knight unlocks the door and walks you out,
Wishing you health, wealth, and happiness,
While those who played the game have lost.
The debt is called; the door is barred;
They finally learn the bitter cost.
If you have the eye, you’ll see the mark:
A bar of gold upon their door.
The stolen gold share they must return
Your share of what was stolen when opening Hell.
