The Killing Field

The purpose of this war we did not know,
But it’s effects were hard and they were starting to show.
Rooted from our homes and hiding in the hills,
Trying just to survive as the night winds chills.

Scared to light a fire, in fear of being spotted or seen,
Not sure who they are other than they are bloodthirsty and mean.
From out of nowhere they seemed to have come,
And the sight that I saw made me bitter and numb.

They didn’t speak our language, their dialect was strange,
But their weapons spoke their anger as the victims came in range.
With no outside word and only a few of us left that managed to survive,
We huddle in small groups as we study and contrive.

Just like in a movie I saw along while back,
Only this time it’s for real and they are not giving anyone any slack.
Bitter and hardened with such contempt I’ve never seen,
They mean business, this well trained and armed, yet unknown killing machine!

There has been no one coming to our defense, and that worries me a lot,
Could our whole country be caught up in this most sinister of plots.
They knew who had what weapons and they went right to the source,
Leaving us defenseless, but maybe that’s par for course.

Well they finally got us spotted so here we’ll make our stand,
Odds are a hundred to one, but before I go they’re going to taste my brand.
Bullets are a flying and there is no place to run,
As a bullet tears out muscle, I hold tighter to my gun.

As the blood leaves my body and weakness takes its place,
Could this be the end of another civilized race.

Ronald, war surely changes a soldier's perspective, doesn't it? When my older cousin went to Vietnam, he was a hot shot dancing king. He came back filled with hate. You capture his spirit well in this great verse. Wish we could dispell war forever! Carolyn

Very forboding tone Ron. Saving Private Ryan was a movie that totally unglalmourized, (if thats a word)war for me. The men and women that choose to protect us should have hero stamped on their foreheads. Powerful writing with this piece. Laurie

The tragedy of war is portrayed in a creative and realistic manner in this poem. Nice use of rhyme. Much to think about here. Keep on writing! Karen
