The Hunt

Cats don't need people
but know people need them
Unlike dogs, they can easily live on their own
Of all the feline species,
the housecat is the most efficient hunter
They can scale a tree in mere seconds
when fleeing or pursuing in earnest
A squirrel wouldn't stand a chance...
People do not adopt cats, cats adopt people
People are a convenience not a requirement
Cats don't pay heed to feeling and emotion
I admire their independence
The cats' first partners were the Egyptians
They received occasional food and shelter
in exchange for rodent population control
Cats will quickly become feral to survive
Of all mammels only rats have adapted better
Most likely both will be here after we are gone.

Sometimes I envy cats
Cats exist totally in the present
with no future and using the past only as a tool
They are completely at peace with their world
Cats are not as intelligent as humans
A cat's only choice is to be exactly what it is

"Cats are not as intelligent as humans." Hi Tim, I had to question this line as some know exactly how to get you to do what they want, yet they won't fall into our traps. Needless to say our Tommy cat owns us. Haha. I enjoyed your poem. I haven't been around much because I am caring for my 5 month old g. daughter while my daughter recoups from a gallbladder operation. I am behind on everything. Thank you for dropping by my haiku and commenting.

Hi Tim - I've had cats too. I've had the one you described - virile, independent just came in for food and a safe sleep. Now the other one was very needy. Never outgrew it and always wanted to lie on top of me on the couch. I swear he'd jump into my arms if he saw a mouse. nice poem love, Kathy

Oie, we don't own a cat, Tim, but I like them well enough! They seem so very mysterious and independant, maybe the only animal that purrs? I think they're hyper intelligent, but then again so are dogs (except ours..hehe) JOKING!!! Her pointy nose would be out of joint.:( Enjoyed your write, and thanks for the comment. Wishing you the best, Mikki

Not sure about your take on CATS..my kitty KNOWS when I'm going to get up, knows when his fav person comes mwf...[I think he thinks he's a dog! plays fetch too!] Hi Tim there are 2 possible end rhyme patterns for the Curtal sonnet abcabcdbcdc or abcabcdcbdc try them both the last lines is a half line. Light & love

I have been a cat owner for most of my life, (or rather...perhaps they have 'owned me"!!). But I too, admire their unique poise, and aloof manner, and sometimes I believe they outsmart us all! I have some favorite childhood memories...dressing up my cat in doll's clothes......(not a happy kitty!)...just tolerating me, until enough was enough! (I still have one scar from that final loss of patience)!!

This is a wonderful write Tim! I think your poem to be exactly right! Only if you've ever had a cat as a pet would you understand this piece! You described them so very well! Great Work!!
