The Great Unknown
To pretend that we're invulnerable is to forget we have to feel
When we try to construct a world like that, we deny that we are real
And in that false phantasm we embody what we fear
As we learn that contradiction is a comfort always near
We embrace what's never possible and lose what's never clear
And we've thought that we have bought some peace that's never really here
So we run from possibilities into some fragile world
That is bound to crumble round us as the future is unfurled
'Cause it's a false flag we've been flyin' try'n to hide what we can't know
It's a ticket we've been buying to a place we cannot go
It's a lie that lies so easy on a conscience that forgets
It's a marriage of convenience with a date that's never set
We hope to live celestially when we're terrestrially bound
Irreconcilably between what we want, and what we've found
Clinging to a shred of hope, a spider floating in the wind
Tethered to a silken thread, without sight of the end
'Cause the end is the beginning of the past that isn't there
What we thought that we've been winning is the loss that's always near
If we try to wake a conscience that sleeps in every day
We forsake what we've thought possible and embrace the easy way
Unrecognizable the difference between what's gained and what is lost
A debt we'll never satisfy without sight of the cost
And that's just what's unknowable, through frosted glass we see
Self-image that won't show itself, reaching just past what we need
To the person that we want our unrequited self to be
And attain the gain that only hope can make reality
