The Gift

The Gift
Roses standing in a pot
Was the giver or the given
Wanting them not?

I had a friend who once was given
A dozen roses by lover or friend.
They stood beautiful straight and tall
But without that needed most of all.

To the one they meant so much
To the other only a part.
A vase was the place
They should rest
Love should never test.

Roses standing in a vase
Within the water they did rest
Where their buds someday will fall
Love is lasting most of all!
