The Future

I read once that we buy books
Not for the knowledge or entertainment
We might gain from them
But for the time to read them.
And this projection of our lives
Into an unknown yet desirable future
Strikes me as both actual and true
And the essence of magical thinking.
In my life I can see these kinds of plans
In so many aspects,
And wonder what time and longevity
Is like for those who don’t plan
And project a future to enjoy.
My hunch is they have much less of both
Time and enjoyment.
