The First Warmth

It did not come
in sudden flame,
nor rise with need
to stake a claim.

No urgent spark,
no restless start—
just something shifting
in my heart.

A quiet thaw
beneath the skin,
where silent spaces
held within

began to stir—
not ache, not plead,
not driven by
a desperate need.

My body stilled,
then slowly woke,
as if the places
once thought broke

still held a pulse,
steady and true,
untouched by all
I once went through.

And in that hush,
without demand,
I felt it rise
without command.

I’m struggling to understand why there have been no comments before mine regarding this brilliant work. Let me then, be the first to say that this is excellent Jennifer. I’m a sucker for poems that rhyme and flow well and this in my book is an example of great rhyming with words that flow beautifully. Thanks for sharing. Cheers - Gary

Gary, this truly made me smile. I put a lot of care into the rhythm, rhyme, and overall flow of my poetry, so your words mean more than you know. Thank you for being the first to leave such a thoughtful comment on this piece—and for reading it with such generosity. Warmly, Jennifer
