The Ferry Captain
Listen to poem:
The Ferry Captain
David J Walker
I
The ferry Captain waited
As long as he could to fill
The manifest of passengers
Called to board
The boat
Tickets please
You must have a ticket
To ride
II
Everyday
The journey seems longer
As passengers grow weaker
Remembering when they were
Younger
Stronger
Closer to the shore of the
Land that bore their souls
III
The Ferry Captain says
Hush children
It won’t be long
Faith holds your fate
As the only distance you
Can see
Is in the past
IV
And at last
The voyage between two shores
That seemed so slow
The land they left
So long ago
As come to pass
Too fast
Too fast
