The Fence
THE FENCE
Somewhere in my constant thought of you
the vagrant dream that comes but never goes,
are secrets of the past I never knew
and things about your life nobody knows.
You are the spark of life, reflected by
the very heart of everything you are,
the silver lining of a troubled sky
so close at hand, and yet so very far.
Out of a mist you showed up misty eyed
and have become the driving force of me,
I wonder at the many times you've cried
for reason that the heart can never see.
And might I say, I'd love you, would I dare,
when diffferences between us are so great,
when I am here, and you are over there,
and fences are between us, with no gate?
All through the night, and all through every day
I picture you, and sometimes speak your name
and have resolved myself to go the way
of never having you forever. All the same.
The sorrow of departure, close at hand,
when we will lock our eyes for one last time,
and I will never come to understand
just why I love you so; my heart's big cime.
In parting, I have tried to let you know
perhaps to ease the pain of loving you,
but this is something that will never go
though you will be a part of everything I ever do.
