The Fence
The sun is high
More joy is nigh
I cannot lie
Why should I sigh
But the neighbor’s fence
We are friends
We see each other’s ends
We have the same trends
We each help when the other bends
Why is there a fence
We will throw each other the ball
So why is there a wall
We help each other when there is a call
It isn’t very small
Why is there this large fence
They trust me
They speak to me
They joke with me
They laugh with me
So why is there this fence
Maybe it is spite
Maybe from last night
Maybe they wish to show might
Maybe that is why it is sixty two inches in height
That could be the purpose of this fence
They only moved in a month ago
This could just be how it goes
This might be just for show
This could be, I suppose
The other neighbors have a fence
But they joke with me
We have fun you see
Maybe that is the key
They don’t want the neighbors jealous of we
But even the neighbors have a fence
What if it is I
What if they think I spy
What if they think I lie
Now I wish to cry
No, none of these answer for the fence
So why is there a fence
It could be for suspense
They could wish to bind us together with this fence
What is up with this fence
Why, why is there a fence
I have found a purpose to this
I can’t believe it was this that I miss
I asked them where I was amiss
They spoke without a list
They just wanted to keep in their dog with a simple fence
