The End

You were good to me, and I to you, And all that was foretold has now come true. Though what we had has now come to its end, We had it all, or so the prophets said. I could not have known that this would be An end so similar to her and me, Or that instead of getting hurt by you, All wrong that would be done was mine to do. I should not have given you the lie That my heart was mine to give. Goodbye, To you, and to the things we had back then. I’m sorry that I’ve let you down again. Though not forever, it was worth the while; I saw you laugh, I watched you cry. Your smile So brightened all my mornings, and you thought That we would be forever, though we’re not. I stole you from another’s arms at first; Though I knew not, and satisfied my thirst. I should have known, since I was selfish then, What goes around will come around again. Though forgiven and though so long past, A sound would haunt me, screaming to the last. The sound told me to run and not to wait, Though now I’ve been crushed by the wheel of fate. I know now I will never see your face, Since you have gone to such a better place; You’ve left us here to live and learn and love, And now you guide our footsteps from above. I wrote down our beginning like a seer Would write the prophecies he holds most dear, And toward the fall, the rules afraid to bend, Put paper down, afraid to write the end.
