The Echo of a Hammer
THE ECHO OF A HAMMER
The echo of a hammer rang from the mount that day
As crowds all jeered in anger and shouted loud to say,
“We find this man is guilty, so crucify him here!”
And so the Roman soldiers now gathered round him near.
And one picked up the nail, while another held his hand,
Then downward came the hammer upon the waiting man.
He never cried in protest, but said, “Father, forgive;
I could call on Your angels to save Me so I’d live,
But I came for this reason, new life for man to win,
That he could be forgiven and saved from all his sin.”
The echo of that hammer rings out through ages now
From there upon Mount Calvary, that cross upon its brow.
For as it nailed my Savior upon that rugged tree,
It nailed my sins there to Him so that I could go free.
He took the curse upon Him, the punishment so fierce
When that nail came down on Him, His hand so deeply pierced.
One day I heard that echo, by faith I saw that hill,
I trusted in the Savior, and peace my life did fill.
The echo of the hammer has saved my soul today
And given me a mansion, a place in heaven to stay.
