Fifty years ago today the world watched as two astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon.

The first human beings to do.

The third astronaut of the Apollo 11 mission Michael Collins orbitted the moon in the mother ship Columbia whilst the Eagle lander made its historic journey, landing in the sea of tranquility.

Who can ever forget those famous words spoken by Neil Armstrong as he stepped onto the lunar surface.

"Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"

July 20th 1969.

Such a wonderful haiku, Tom, and going straight to my faves. I know you are a space buff, so when I saw this title I had to come by and read it. Perfect that you posted on the 50th anniversary. ~ John

Thank you very much John, space has always fascinated me since I was a young boy, how far mankind has come since President Kennedy gave that rousing speech. A shame he didn't live to see his dream come true. Thanks too for the fave. Next stop Mars. Tom

A day to remember and a historical moment never to be forgotten - a fitting haiku so well penned Tom - I wrote a poem titled 'First ment to land on Moon' - 6 weeks after I joined poetry soup - my father used to collect paper clippings of important events - there was a newspaper article on the Sunday after Apollo 11 landed - I posted the cutting - blessings, Jennifer.

You're probably aware Michael Collins was one of those responsible for getting Ireland independence from England. Both my parents came from County Clare on the west coast.

Yes, my grandfather's side came over from Ireland in 1700's. My brother's father is all Irish. He is my half brother. His father and grandmother never turned grey into their 90's amazingly. My mother is mostly Irish. My father was Irish and English. xxoo

Thanks Connie, I remember watching it as a 13 year old, and have always been fascinated by space exploration ever since, I never tire of watching the ISS fly over our house. An app on my phone tells me. Michael Collins played a big part in the mission's success and his greatest fear was returning to earth alone. What a coincidence your brother bears his name. It's an Irish name, are any of your family from Ireland. ?. Tom

fabulous haiku Tom, today we went to a 2 hour talk/ film about the historical event of the moon landing, to see footage I've never seen before and the craters left when they landed and the equipment on the surface of the moon was so interesting :-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks Jan, I remember watching it like it was yesterday but fifty years, a lifetime ago. It was without doubt a brilliant achievement, the astronauts, mission control and the mathematicians working everything out there was no margin for error, watched a documentary tonight about it. Tom

I recall watching on tv in Greece in a hotel this historic moment. Looking back , I see the magnitude of the achievement combining it with the technology of the time. Your Haiku is a great tribute to the event dear, Tom!
