The Dreams That Were
In youth, the children pretend
plan, pursue what dreams may recommend,
they run, they play, greeting life in every moment.
In young adulthood
the dream, they plan, they work and achieve
clutching at the dream in which they believe;
at middle age, the wanderlust begins to fade
they easily become disenchanted along the parade
fearful as they hold on tight, an easy masquerade;
in rushing senior years too quickly come
they slow, look back measuring their run
accepting, acknowledging that time may be done;
as age creeps in, the imaginings again begin
and all those dreams, the missing ones
seek time enough to be done.
