The Deepest Pool
(“Dark Pool of Light”, 2011, original oil)
I’m a superficial kind of guy
Enjoying the finer things in life;
Sunshine, flowing clouds, the birds and bees
Art, music and the companionship
Of simple dogs and dear friends,
But at the edge of this,
Like the alluring edge of a tall cliff
Or seductively beautiful nebula hot spring pool
Waiting just below the surface
Is a bittersweet vastness
Moist with eternal tears
Filled to overflowing
Holding all I have loved and lost
All the nouns of my existence
People, places and things
Which represent Life’s actual verbing
The silver lining beauty of this vastness
Is its universality
Here we all meet
Here we all relate
Here we come in our own way
And depart as well
Never really done with our grieving
Or ever fully healed
To find our own path’s onward.
