The Cold

The Cold
	blew in on a fast northwest train;
the sky was over shadowed by dark, gray clouds
	rushing from the south to the north.
There was no escape this time
	as the summer stragglers die
and late bloomers
 	are felled by an unexpected frost.
The last of the determined hanging foliage
	could no longer resist the change
and autumn gives way
        to winter’s chilling temps.
Brisk and cold, it succeeds in changing seasons
	that once struggle to remain.
Summer is now long forgotten
	buried beneath leaf piles and decaying fruits of spring.
Winter wins.
