Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
Hearts were eager and energetic – as wild as the sage grouse
No one could sleep because of those presents beneath the tree
They’d gone to bed at twelve but still weren’t sleeping at three
Finally, Dad arose from his bed, ignoring the time – before five
He hadn’t been sleeping, but thinking how he might survive
This Christmas Eve, with his family all so happy and excited
Thinking of all the presents, his heart was glowing, delighted
Downstairs, he creeped toward the tree with all those pretty gifts
Thankful that this year they hadn’t been quite so broke - spendthrifts
Going all out with the new credit card – charging everything in sight
January would be atrocious, but right now they didn’t need to be tight
It wasn’t too long before the entire family was gathered in the room
Joy was ever present and the darkness didn’t bring them any gloom
They were ready to open their gifts and not one heart was fretting
Everyone was filled with good cheer and no giver thought of regretting
Laughing and talking, sharing in the blessings of a festive season
Mom was making the rounds, giving gifts without any rhyme or reason
Not one heart felt down and everywhere - were smiles all around
Wonderous music filled the air, lingering merrily in the background
The gifts were opened and not one thought of what had been received
It was the gift given that brought all thoughts to the hope they believed
This day, this celebration, was all about the birth of One who brought
Grace that would awaken the soul to a kindness, a love that all sought
There are no words, no gifts, no memories – greater than this light
Who shines brighter, far clearer, than any star in the sky at night
It is this light – this love – who brings the Christmas spirit to life
With a lasting feeling, a glow, a joy that relieves every pain and strife
Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
We remembered to count our blessings, kiss our spouse
And listen to the joy that lingers in the heart who believes
In the One who came to fill hearts with love that never leaves
