The Cardinal's Message
THE CARDINAL’S MESSAGE
He once helped those who flew the sky to serve our country there,
With eyes so healthy they could see both near and everywhere.
And when he left the service, he pursued a great career
To help his patients with their eyes to see things bright and clear.
One patient that he had one day was looking in the sky
And saw a bright, red bird up there as gracefully it did fly.
“That bird’s a cardinal,” she said, “and now it seems to say
That since you helped me with my sight that things will be okay.”
The surgeon just could not forget that lesson from that bird
And every time he saw it then, that message again heard.
He shared it with his wife at times as they would gaze above
And talk about the life they lived and talk about their love.
Then death’s cold shadow came one day and took her husband dear,
But there above that cardinal did once again appear.
It told her though her husband now had gone upon his way,
She could look up into the sky, hear in that bird’s song say,
“It’s Wilbur, dear, I’m here with you, I’ve taken on new wing,
It’s going to be okay for you as now you hear me sing.
I’m flying in the sky again, like in the days before
And meeting some I helped on earth to see in days of yore.”
Each time now as you look above, dear Elsie, realize,
That cardinal so bright and red gives hope there in the skies.
Through that small creature God above just wants to say today
That Jesus’ blood, red like that bird, can wash your sins away.
I hope you’ve trusted Him today and know that up above
You’ll meet your husband once again, forever share his love.
