THE BOXED HEART

THE BOXED HEART

Whose heart so kept with lock and key,
a stranger to loves pain.
The masses weep while sound I sleep
My heart's box wrapped in chains.

Take not the step, the leap, the chance,
fall not on one's own sword.
Let others flirt and feign romance,
I am my hearts own lord.

The happily ever after,
a fairy tale, a lie.
To be that fool to gawk and drool
per chance I'd rather die.

I sit and smirk at lovers' fails;
In love I shan't partake.
I've seen the hurt, and heard the wails
of melancholy's ache.

I pray one day I'll not succumb,
to the devils dirty dance.
I lock my heart in solitude
for just such happenchance.

The isolation strains my soul,
I yet put in the fight.
I'll go not meek nor quietly
into that darkest plight.

It wears me down beneath my crown.
My kingdom for a heart.
Lamenting for one of my own,
love's dead before the start.

What never was cannot be missed,
or so it's often siad.
Tis' I who decried it loudest
now lie in my own made bed

"Thou dost protest, to much," as such,
my truth upon dusty shelf.
The blustering distain of heart,
a lie I tell myself.

'Tis not my box, 'tis not my key,
'twas taken long ago.
The hurt, the loss, the angst, and ache
are mine and mine alone.
