Notes About The Poem

The Blue Pacific and Me

"Lucky me - I grew up by the Pacific sea" ~ quote by poet

Its depths and vast breadth suggest a mystery.
I've pondered it from airplanes, boats, and shore -
the Pacific Ocean in all its glory,
from its gentle lapping to its mighty roar.

Underneath the unchanging blue expanse,
lies a wide-ranging world of features -
magma oozing from deep sea vents,
blue whales, giant squid, and all kinds of creatures.

Earth's biggest site's fascinating history,
from Polynesians in palm leaf canoes
to the battles of recent generations,
and the many lives we had to lose.

More than that are personal memories
and evocations of sites and smells,
as my eyes well with salty moisture.
I am with Mother, picking up seashells,

And it's to the Pacific, I must thank
for the sunsets and moonlit nights,
promoting long lost budding romances.
Oh, how I miss those sweet delights.

Did yo move away?? Why?? I made the same mistake once, moving away from what was 'Paradise on Earth' for me. Why do we do this to ourselves? At the very least, we should move back before we are disabled. ~ gw

Nope, I still live 3 miles from the beach. The only thing that died off was the romance. The beach is still all wet!l I feel like I'm spoiled, living in such a perfect climate. My son lives on the other coast in NYC. I think he's out of his mind, because it's even more expensive than here, and the climate, to my way of thinking, is a little harsh. Yet, NYC is a pretty exciting place I hear.

I envy those who grow up by oceans and beaches. I bet Pacific is most popularly chosen ocean in this contest. You made it more personal than I did. Great job

Thanks, Andrea! When I was a kid, my neighbor's sister, about 40 years old, visited from Oklahoma, and we took her to the beach. She said it was the first time she had ever seen the ocean. I remember I could not believe that. Then again, I never left the state of California until I was 23 years old.
