The Black Cat and the Butterfly

The little black cat with eyes of olive green,
Her fur like a shadow with a sunshine sheen,

A flutter of his orange wings carries that monarch in the breeze,
As he mimics an autumn leaf floating around with great ease,

He feels right at home in a cloudless sky of baby blue,
The endless joys the two share together can never subdue,

Gladly that butterfly comes every afternoon just to say hello,
As she becomes lost amongst the lavender and daffodil yellow,

Her pink nose gently sniffing the bud of the white rose,
As our curiosity and need to explore in nature only grows,

Blooms are nevermore gorgeous as in the warm month of May,
All the troubles in our worlds are now distant memories today,

We have have been friends forever, and I'm really not sure why,
I'm just happy to have the sunshine and that little butterfly,

All of a sudden the orange monarch lands down on her paw,
And her bright green eyes open and widen with pure awe,

The butterfly teases her, he knows how to enchant,
She jumps up and tries to fly like him, but she can't,

As the monarch chases the sunset with the fading day,
The little black cat cries and wishes for him to stay.

Yes they are free as are we...but sometimes we don't want them to roam so far away from ourselves :)

Who can understand cats? Not this person. Would a cat wish to kill a butterfly, could it even reason the beauty and the grace. Your piece somehow raises these questions. daver

You can never really tell what is going on in a cat's head, can you? I love their mysterious nature, though... Thank you for reading and commenting, Daver. I appreciate it very much :)

A sweet, delightful poem, Kelly. Cats and butterflies never fail to attract our attention. I like that butterfly which mimics a floating autumn leaf...and when it "chases the sunset with the fading day". ~ Warm regards // paul

Thank you so much, Paul. I was inspired by Eve Roper's recent contest and the way my cat is so curious. Everything just fascinates her... Those lines are also two of my favorites in this poem :)

Black cats are gamesters. I ought to know. I have several. I sense an adoration for your black cat. Am I wrong? My Mamma Mia has had babies and she is the smartest kitty we've ever had. With her paws or her meow she can get whatever she wants. Love this poem. daver

You are right, Daver. Pepper is my cat and I've had her for less than a year. But I fell in love with her right away. She is a very smart and curious cat who is always getting into trouble. I don't know how I ever lived without her! :)

very cute one, Kelly. I have a black cat too, but I don't let her go outside, so this is a scene I can only imagine!

Mine is an indoor cat, too. She seems to want to be outdoors, but I'm afraid that she might run away... Thank you for taking the time to read my poem, Andrea. I appreciate it very much :)
