The Big Step Down

THE BIG STEP DOWN

He listened to beautiful music, the angels revered Him with awe;
He lived in a beautiful city, more glorious than you ever saw.
He walked down the streets gold and shiny, He looked at the gates pearly 	white;
If ever there was any splendor, ‘twas here in this city so bright.
It never saw death or a sorrow, it never knew sadness or tears;
It never had night, for its brightness shone on through the long, countless years.
There never was sickness or weakness, no anger, no bitterness there,
No evil of any kind present; the place was so perfect and fair.
And from the right hand of His Father He flung out the stars into place;
With each planet, each sun, and each comet He dotted the blackness of space.
He spoke and life came to existence, in six days completed the plan,
And then in His image He fashioned the creature that He would call man.
“’Twas all good,” He said, and He rested, but then came the tempter along,
And through his sly words he soon detoured man from his direction and throng.
So now as He surveyed the damage, He knew but one thing He could do:
He’d have to leave all of this splendor, His home up above in the blue.
He’d have to leave all of that beauty, those mansions, those streets, and His throne
And enter the womb of a virgin to buy back the man He once owned.
It was a big step down to Calvary, from splendor and beauty to shame,
From singing and worship and honor to halls where they’d curse at His name.
And yet He was willing to take it, to sacrifice riches untold
So we could take one great step upward to walk with Him on streets of gold.
One step from a mansion to stable, one step from a throne to a womb.
One step from a king to a servant, one step from a life to a tomb.
A face so Divine and so handsome, a body so perfectly made,
Now battered and bruised up so badly, wrapped up and so quietly laid.
One step, though, and death now was conquered, one step and the price had been paid;
One step and by faith in this Savior His children forever are made.
His step from perfection and beauty to this sinful world here below
Was the greatest step down ever traveled because He loved you and me so.
One step now you need to discover all that He has purchased for you;
One step of believing and trusting in what Jesus Christ did for you.
It’s not such a big step to travel when you think of the step down He made;
Trust Him as your Lord and Your Savior; trust in that great price that He paid.
