The Big Issue

Cardboard lay’s upon the floor
In front of the shop it blocks the door
A tell tale sign of a poor night’s sleep
Warm and dry they try to keep.
Safe inside - we lock the door
Without a thought for the really poor?
When night does fall, the risks are great
A real cold night could seal their fate.
A wash and shave and comb the hair
What could we do to show we care?
But remember this, they feel the cold
And it gets worse as they grow old.
So think about what other ways
You could ensure your good deed pays.
Soup, blankets and toilet tissue
Or stop and chat when they shout “Big Issue”?!

(For people not in the u.k The Big issue is a magazine the homeless sell to raise cash)

Enjoyed the write here Roger, good tribute to the big issue sellers, some of whom are Immigrants 'temporary housed' the publication at one stage was addressing some important features of government policy, I have not read it for some time must catch up.'

Roger: I don't know the weather where you live or the number of homeless you have but this is a lovely tribute to any that find themselves "there". We have far too many that call " no-where" their home. Thank you for sharing these thoughts. oldbuck

Hi Roger, excellent poem full of contrasts. It prods the conscience somewhat, very thought provoking.
