The Big Bright Smile

THE BIG BRIGHT SMILE Every time he shook my hand a bright smile filled his face; I can’t recall a single time when that did not take place. And as old age crept slowly in, his body became frail, That big, bright smile still filled his face; it never seemed to fail. That smile spoke loudly of his faith--so true, so bold, so strong; It kept him through the storms of life, no matter short or long. That smile showed through his bearded face with such a special glow One could not doubt he knew the Lord and where some day he’d go. Then came the days the final steps he’d take upon earth’s sod, And we all knew unless God touched, he’d soon the gold streets trod. The family gathered one last time, and I’m sure all the while When he was conscious and awake, they’d see that big, bright smile. Then as our group sang on that night of one gasping for breath, He smiled at all just one last time and closed his eyes in death. An instant later, Floyd woke up, a smile to wear once more, And he saw Jesus smile at him upon the golden shore! I’ll miss that big, bright smile for now upon his bearded face, But I know I’ll meet him again in heaven’s happy place. There as we walk the streets of gold with loved ones all the while, We’ll all be happy, just like him--we’ll all wear big, bright smiles! --Written in memory of Floyd Wemer
