The Angel In My Head
The Angel In My Head
By Roy Merritt
I was in the clutches of misery, misery had me down
I was feeling beside myself when I heard a glorious sound
Somewhere in the distance I heard an angel croon
I heard an angel singin’ to me singin’ a familiar tune
And as I moved closer to it seeking out where it be
Wondering if that angel’s voice was singin’ it just for me
Was it really an angel or some siren from the foamy sea
Some siren like the ones that lured the crew of Ulysses
And as I kept going I never saw from where it came
But it continued to appeal to me and set my soul aflame
Was it a voice from Motown which my youth recalls so great
Was it that Memphis sound or Nashville in a bordering state
It made me want to dance to be shaggin’ down on the shore
It made want to talk to friends it made want much more
It made want to see family want to embrace my girl
It made want to show love to embrace the whole wide world
And as I kept going through that darkness there alone
I came to realize where it be the source of that sweet song
Yes I finally discovered as I followed in its stead
The only angel singin’ to me was the angel in my head
And you know everybody needs an angel in their head
Yes sir everybody needs an angel singin’ in their head
