The Angel and the Scarecrow

She was only eight years old
When her mama passed away
All alone, her daddy gone
For he left them both one day

Her grandparent's farm, now her home
There was no where else to go
All of her friends, now left behind
With all she's come to know

Working the farm, day after day
Was all that she ever knew
Like a captive in a foreign land
She couldn't even go to school

Somewhere, in a dusty field
Was a scarecrow, that she called Ben
This man in tattered clothes and straw
Had become her only friend

She would tell him all of her secrets
As she made up games to play
She told him of her mother's love
This stranger made of hay

She pretended that she was an angel
As she'd spread her wings of white
It was the angel and the scarecrow
Who would sometimes play all night

She finally grew up, and moved away
And has a family of her own
She never forgot, her friend named Ben
Who was there when she was alone
