Ten Years Have Passed

Perception of time is a puzzle to me
Sometimes fast, maybe slow, you see
The 9-11 horror my confusion betrays
It may seem a lifetime or only a few days

I was dozing in the recliner, all alone
Came an unexpected ring of the phone
My daughter said, “Not many details yet,
But you better turn on the television set.”

And there it was right before my eyes
A disaster unfolding to my total surprise
I knew the world was a dangerous place
But a plane into a building was a disgrace

Any type of military facility it was not
Thousands of civilians destruction got
While I was struggling to comprehend
As I watched, it happened over again

Into the other tower a large plane flew
Almost instantly, it was smoking too
First one tower, and then the other fell
“There are no words,” reporter did tell

Foreign policy was beyond their control
In its formation, they had had no role
They were folks trying to earn a living
Just a day of work they were giving

They had felt no real cause for alarm
But man dominated man to his harm
