Ten Seconds In the Storm

TEN   SECONDS   IN   THE   STORM

Again wind at the bow
Is unfettered, wild, raging now
Rolling the pitching  deck;
And whipping off the thick neck
Of the moving water mountain,
Their power  uncertain,
Gattling-spray-bullets
- No more mere droplets -
Pitched from a steep cliff-wave
That  spells our danger grave.
Sea hurls itself at ship’s sides:
A booming clang overrides
The storm  and  ship shudders
And  leans on its rudders,
And again we all hold breath -
Is  this finally  her death?

I've been through many storms while offshore fishing and thoughts like these go through one's mind. The way you described the wave reminded me of the movie "The Perfect Storm." Did you see that wall of water as the Andrea Gail tried to climb it and finally overturned? Cool poem, Syd! Love, Carolyn
