A tanka in English is essentially a 3 line hiku(SHOW)with a couplet amplification (TELL)

without- the waning sun warms my face shalom cloaks the wells within with a tremor of light- daybreak tinges the nigrescent sky grey- the horizon appears distinct in my mind's eye on the wind a bell tolls memories surface- words unerased the image fades huddled together from the sheeting rain the unbrellas mob the hearse- then in twos slowly separate spoor tracks imprint the virgin snow- footsteps of yesteryear echo in my mind the diary fell pages scattered the floor memories lie just out of reach chill breath of dawn lights upon my window-pane nighttime's promises freeze into crystal above the still strand shrieks of seagulls die on the inshore breeze- our twin footsteps disappear as sunset dissolves november the fifth- layered rolls of liquid fog envelope the bonfire- the party becomes a damp squib a single owl screech breaks the silent November night- the Hunters moon waxes blue Summer, past its best, pampas reaching heavenward, trees about to rest- Japanese anemone as far as my eye can see hanging from the trees winter fog welcomes the dawn and obscures the light-- cobwebs shimmer necklaced to the hedge

Brian, It’s hard to give up the 5 7 5 7 7 template after many years, but your examples are an encouragement to give it a go.

Dear brian, they are all so beautiful, so descriptive and so well written, I absolutely loved reading your chain of tankas, especially the diary one is so deep and also love how picturesque and artistic your word weaving in every tanka is! Beautiful! Pleasure reading you. Hope you are doing well. Sending you light always
