Years ago, hot summer romance;
Young hearts never had a chance.
Quaint and backwoods southern town;
She never got her wedding gown.
Promised to love 'til endless time;
Sudden brief affair; rapt, sublime.
Picnic lunches, days at fair;
Lived without one single care.
Her parents did not approve.
Her independence she had to prove.
Secret meetings, dark whispers of love;
The future wasn't much thought of.
When her stomach began to swell,
He said he didn't know her very well.
Without a goodbye, left town in haste,
First love had bitter aftertaste.
Wherever she later chose to walk,
She was shadowed by the talk.
The whispers followed her forever.
She had a lovely child, however.
