Such Vanity

Two lovely ladies were walking down the street
Said one to the other, “Wouldn’t it be neat
If my husband gave me some expensive perfume?”
In reply, the other said, “What a message, I think,
Suggesting, in the most subtle way, you stink?
I would much rather have a beautiful mink coat,”
“So,” her friend responded, “that you can gloat?”
“Not at all,” her companion replied with subtlety,
“Because it would be ever so becoming to me.”
“Think of all the minks who would give up their all
So that you might become the belle of the ball,”
To which the former did not hesitate to reply,
“What better cause for the little creatures to die?”
“Such vanity!” --her friend whispered with a sigh.

From what I see on this side of the pond, they seem to go in and out of vogue. I do like a fleece-lined jacket in the wintertime.

"“What better cause for the little creatures to die?” My father was a furrier; he used to argue they would all die out if they were not trapped and killed - from a mink pandemic.

I really don't know; you're father was probably right. I hear that argument about shooting the deer, but I simply could not/cannot do it. They are so beautiful in nature, and we are taking all they have...their lives. I think about the polar bears. I could never harm one of them. They are so beautiful in the wild. Hmmm...come to think of it the "mink pandemic" might be their slaughter to make mink coats! Hmmm....

If these two are 'friends,' I can just imagine the 'fun little talks' they'll have when they become enemies...

They certainly are on that path, aren't they? There's just this little hint of meanness and animosity in both of them. Oh, well, it's typical at least.

Amazes me how many will only wear clothes with a designer label on or made from animals. Tom

Yep...me, too, Tom. I really thought that sort of thing was over with, but apparently not!

That hit a note with me, Milton. That humans would kill a beautiful creature to cover their mortal bodies and gloat about it, deserves a like punishment. And that I'd rejoice to see! / Maurice

Sadly, so true. I'm not a very materialistic person. I'm just thankful for what I have, even if it's very little.

Vain people place too much importance on material things. Your lines are proof that some want more than they will ever need. Perfume and furs? No thank you.

I so agree with you, Jenna. I don't know why we put such value on "things," but I can tell you it is a misplaced value!
