Strength

we huddled in my bed that fall
baby, toddler, mama
suddenly one day I knew
I'd lost the blind faith new mothers have
in motherhood and marriage
the myth that somehow either one is refuge
shelter strength
that motherhood moment when you realize
you are in this on your own
husband, father, partner, lover
are never really there
and you cower washed with anxiety freaking out
until
that bitter wall of strength comes in
and your life is changed forever
nevermore dependent
never weak or small
you hold that grudge until you die
a sheild, a weapon, a flag
you stand up
let the dogs out
and become a woman.
