Strangers In the Night

Who are these people we meet?
In our sleep
Strangers in the night
That can delight
Or cause fright
Nightmares
Ogres and foreigners
Who we do not see by day
And mysteriously fade away
When the day breaks.
Who are they?

Why do we dream?
Does anyone know
This problem bothers me so
Why can't we sleep in peace
And cease to worry about earthly things?
That fills our daily lives.
Do we need to dream to survive?
Dreams can tug your heartstrings,
Make your soul sing.
Cause you to cry or die.
Another world unfurls
Until we see daylight
And see the disappearance of,
The strangers in the night.

It is said that the subconscious awakes our images from the deep and transforms them into dreams.

Love the title and the way it works in the poem, Shirley. Never thought of these type of people that way, i.e., as 'Strangers in the Night.' Sometimes people I know very well, family and friends, conduct themselves as strangers. Much food for thought here. ~ Y. D. Ream

Very enlightening and I do share your curiosity that why do we dream, like what’s their purpose.. this poem wonderfully adresses that question.
