Notes About The Poem

Still Street

A porch light hums faintly against the slow-warming dawn;
     a single leaf turns over in the breeze without hurry.

Far down the block, a mailbox closes with a muted click,
     while the street rests easy, holding its quiet like a cup.

The recurring imagery of quiet faintness nicely compliments the title and subject, and I especially love the ending image of quiet being held like a cup. It makes me think of someone not putting their cup down because that might make a sound.
