Notes About The Poem

Woody Gutherie is one famous person who died from Huntington's Disease..

We are familiar with him because he was a musician and singer..He wrote the

song "This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land"...

Awareness of the illness may lead to research and a cure or at least a treatment.

At present there is nothing to treat or cure the illness. It is a death sentence of long, slow

painful death..Many suicides happen when the person knows they have it or think

they are coming down with it..Sara

Steeped In Tradition

Couples marry; it's tradition
Since the beginning of time
Our children would do the same
While in their youthful prime

Handsome, intelligent, employed
Would be their choicest beaus
No ills would befall a safe home
Established in love that grows

Into a heart entered a love
A beau with mutant genes
Carrier of Huntington's
Disease that stole all esteem

As tradition would have it happen
A child would come their way
Innocent was the baby boy
That in the cradle lay

As great grandparents cuddled him
Never did they expect
Such a fate would entangle, hold;
And people would reject

Thirteen innocent years God granted
Then his joy was taken away
He knew that he was a defect
Hope disappeared to stay

At age thirteen when Cody's dad was diagnosed with HD then Cody knew
he could come down with the illness..He was tested at 18 and he had the
gene..He now at 29 has the early stages of the disease..Longevity expected 10 years..God could intervene our only hope at this time..

Unfinished..Don't know exactly how to go forward yet

Jo, Yes, there are very many rare illnesses like Huntington's Disease. By writing this I am hoping to make people area of this illness..Since it is inherited there is not very much talk about it..It is a very horrible disease in that the person who has it goes down hill and dies usually from choking to death or aspiration pneumonia because they get where they can't swallow even their own spit..Sara

Charlie, The only thing that is available now for families that HD is involved is that fact that they have a test now that they can preform that tells if the person has the gene or not..If one has the gene then they can pass it on to their children so that gives them options about what to do about having offsprings..Sara

Woody Guthrie fought what he thought was injustice until the desease cut him down at a relatively. Young age. He was Bob Dylan's mentor and idol.the tag on his guitar said "this macHine kills fasciasts". A poet, traveling from cause to cause. Pete Seager kind of carried on his tradition, after Woody passed. He left a free spirit legacy that lives in a lot of poets hearts, or it should. He accomplished a lot even after his diagnosis. Treatment I'm sure have improved sense those days, never give up the good fight. God speed...

Charlie, This isn't fiction..One of our daughters married a man who this illness was in his family but we did not know what it was..The son-in-law came down with it at age 38..Our grandson has been tested for it and has the gene and now the illness..Our grandson has not married nor produced any children so it stops with him in his daddy's line anyway..Sara
