Standoff

As evening fell,
Air gray and still,
My ears discerned
A cardinal’s shrill—

High in an oak,
He fussed, aglow,
While crouched a cat
With stealth below;

From bough to branch,
That bird flashed bright
Until his foe
Slunk into night.
