Sparrow

Upon my fence alit a pretty sparrow Her stay was brief, and yet I felt more noble Than if the visit were of king or pharaoh (inspired by writings of Henry David Thoreau)

Nicely done - such meaning and content in three lines ... the wonder of poetry is oft' times how few words are required. Beauty in simplicity, which takes extensive knowledge of vocabulary - the more words we KNOW, the fewer we have to use ... I think many people think otherwise, that the more vocab you learn, the more your poetry should be jammed full of "eloquence". It is quite the contrary, don't you think? Love this one, John! :o)

Gregory, vocabulary and economy are two areas I've been trying to work on (I seem to be wired to wax verbose!) I learn much from my fellow writers on Soup and in reading the classics. So kind of you to stop by and give such an uplifting comment - thank you! John

Just love your classy style and cadence. Here's to a little nobility amidst the noise of the raging, ragged mobs today! Thanks, John! G. L. in the contest. Cheers, Gershon

Beautiful sentiments expressed here, John. I've not seen the use of lit in this context but presume that you're using it to mean alighted?

Wendy, thank you not only for your kind words, but for your observation. I looked online and I believe I've been incorrectly using the word 'lit' instead of 'alit' (which is a valid substitution for 'alighted': https://www.dictionary.com/browse/alight Fortunately, I was able to make the edit without affecting the syllable count. I sincerely appreciate you correcting my mistake! ~ John
