Soul friend
I met a soul friend
And our attachment did grow
His skill and charm, few will know
Long distance friendship can build intense bonds
The question begged, "Why were we not friends all along ?"
He hailed from the Bay
I resided mostly in New York
But that time and distance
Seemed irrelevant, in short
Both with a dark and unforgiving past
But true friends, somehow
Make your youth
Everlasting
One day I woke with a deep, true sadness
That try as I may, I could not shake
slipping again into traumatic madness
With vivid dreams I was standing at the Wake
In my frazzled mind, the question plagued,
Did I lose another of my Soul family ?"
As his Brothers' number was calling me
I prayed it was only my childhood anxieties
Waking me up from this once joyful dream
The voice told me My friend went to rest the night Before
But Fate had other plans in store
His insulin pump malfunctioned or ignored
And Forever left, to awaken No more
I did think it strange that I didn't hear a word
My birthday came and passed
Nearly unheard
That wasnt at all like my Dear Friend
My troubled thoughts feared familiar trend
He mentioned, a few times, that He felt sick
But how was I to know he'd fail so quickly?
Are we meant to gaze upon each other's hearts,
So fleeting a time before our souls embark?
Thoughts in my mind's eye of him in such distress
Made my next few months a blurry mess
All that was left with was a nagging reflection
That He was truly all alone
In his final moments of objection
In agony and reaching for help
and only Death, the One who found him
No wonder the messages came No more
No birthday wishes or songwriting lore
No further renditions of songs on guitar
No more chatter or silly wisecracks galore
As I felt the true silence of his soul leaving shore
Feeling misunderstood and broken apart
Another crack in a deeply wounded heart
My conscience finally accepted
That my friend had left
And I wonder if this life is just a cruel test
For only the strong, healthy or Chosen
And all you're promised is this very moment
So it's best to grab life and take all that you can
And not be afraid to allow people in
For it's only the souls we meet along the way
That give us the strength, for a lifetime
To stay
