Sorry

For years she did nothing, knowing her husband abused the kids;
For fear that he’d turn on her, from his devious ways she always hid.
She tried to make it up to them by making life fun when he was gone,
But their spirits were too damaged; his shadow was too long.

She watched her children suffer through decisions she had made;
Turning a blind eye to the abuse is the hand that she had played.
She didn’t have the courage to make this monster stop;
She wanted to be stronger but, unfortunately, she was not.

She finally had to do something; she couldn’t take it anymore;
“Sorry” was the only word on the suicide note left on the floor.

Very sad poem. Beautifully captures the silence of cowardice... Abuse must be resisted, reported,vocally protested against. Sad thing is: we think of what will people say, what if he turns against me, this will not happen again, & other useless things. Even sadder is the probability that the abused kids turning into abusive parents. An excellent poem, though a sad one. Mahmood

Sad poem, so many other options, but bet this happens more than we know if not literally than in an abstract way through drugs or eating...Nicely done though.

It is difficult to comment on the rhyme and meter of the poem because I'm caught on the content. The cycles of abuse are difficult to conquer, but impossible if the author hasn't faced the abuse of his/her own childhood. If we were abused as children, then doesn't it behoove us to create generations of children who know no abuse, rather than adding the willful death of the "nonabusing" parent to the abuse already suffered. Answer the question, then write from the heart.

This is tragic, Joe. She should have taken her kids and left for a safe haven. Now her children have only their father and that does not bode well for their future. Very sad poem, but this type of thing probably happens often. Love, Carolyn
