Something You Left Behind

I found something of yours you left behind: Something I did not expect to find. The sudden surge of memories Shocked me so hard I couldn't breathe— It almost knocked me to my knees. My whole world came undone. I found something of yours you left behind: Something that you wore when you were mine. You wore it with your wedding gown, Like a tiara or a crown. It turned my world all upside down. You always were “the one”. I found something of yours you left behind: Something that my love for you enshrined. I found it hidden from the light, That thing you used to wear at night. That came down when I held you tight, Back when we were one. I found something of yours you left behind, Something that I never wished to find— 'Cause there's no going back, you see, To times when you were here with me. You left a painful void in me; But still life must go on. I think of what you left behind And then it came to me: The saddest thing you left behind Turned out to be me. (Chorus ) I thought I'd gotten over you; But I was wrong, you see. You don't get over love that's true, Nor what was meant to be.

Dear Mark, I am all too familiar with the "painful void" you describe so eloquently. Especially love the words: "The saddest thing you left behind turned out to be me." Indeed, these feelings never seem to fade, even though people claim time heals. There is always a lingering loneliness that plagues us. Awesome write! Carolyn

Thank you for commenting. This song was musically inspired by the love theme to the film The Sandpipers, called The Shadow Of Your Smile. I took the melody and added new sad words, then later changed the melody into something like a tango. Reminds me a bit of the Abba song Winner Takes It All. It is not autobiographical for me though,

Thank you. I was hoping this one would be featured. It is one of my best lyrics, and it has an interesting jazzy/ tango-ish/bossa-nova-ish accompaniment which is fun to play on guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards.

Thank you for commenting. This is a song I wrote last year, and am recording. It sounds a little like a European style tango, even with accordion flourishes. I hope you hear it on youtube someday.

She left behind a love so true. A kind of love she never knew. The world keeps turning round and round. But a love like that just can't be found. Lost love. UHG!
