Some Birds Are Not Meant To Be Caged

"Some Birds Are Not Meant to be Caged" Stephen King ~~~~~ Early this morning, I heard this quote: "Some birds are not meant to be caged!" I wept so hard I could not stop! My life flashed before me like the fast spinning hands on an out of control clock. From a brunette with braids at seven years old till today~ I never liked rules or to do what I was told! Especially not here at Poetry Soup. In contests, I feel like a prisoner with a kindly warden about to hang me by an opinionated, poetic rope. I like to fly free across summertime azure skies, To choose my own trees, to go in my chosen direction. A poet knows when they deserve First Place. To let another decide otherwise, is for me only, a poetic disgrace. I honestly can no longer pour my soul on paper, so openly. That's something almost unholy for me. To then type "entered in Contest" And have another tell me where I stand? Not music to my ears, I need the "free to be me" band! No can do, I dance to my inner drummer. My form, my subject! Not yours. All the rest for me is just a mere showcase bummer. April 19,2020 2:30pm PST

I am new to poetry and write what ever enters my head an in what ever way it takes me, I have looked at the contests and have said I would like to try one but that is as far as its goes for me right now. I am happier as a free poet rather than a caged one. Emilia xx

Hi Dear Emilia, I have been in a few and won a few. Somehow, on my Poetry, I do not want "entered in." at the bottom?Some here wont write one unless its in a contest. I like poets who come up with their own ideas and fly the course of their soul.its all choice.not right or wrong. The worst part for me, is only the top winners get Congtrats. The rest do not. Boo! Hi Pangie, another honest write from your pen. As far as contests are concerned, I have stopped doing them. They are a little too tight for me now. I like to spread myself as I please. I am just happy to write as i choose, without rules. There was a time when i enjoyed doing contests, there were less rules then. Has to be a fav. Blessings and Hugs....Mike. XX

Hi and I can relate totally to you, I always feel bad when for a Poet friend whose so obvious a great great poem lands up last. But that's the name of the game. I don't consider myself capable of being a sponsor. I was a school teacher who hated grading. Kids or adults, to be at the mercy of one person, does not set well.. But realize people do love them. Its all about choice, if you write and are pleased with it who cares what others think, its already a winner in your book. When I joined soup my poetry was all rhyme and entering a contest just gives you a chance to try a new form that you wouldn't have even thought about trying. Tom

That is true, Tom. I don't care how any poet writes, rhyme, no rhyme, etc. I feel whatever form I feel is best me, I will use. And why can't we try a form without being in a contest? I know forms, I just don't like them. You must write any way you like. One of the best writers here gets a paucity of comments. I would die if he gave up his artistry for a one liner. But now not, if the contests are giving some inspiration, why not is my mentality.. As you said, it depends on the poet, whether to live in a cage or to fly to the firmament..

Everyone here will do as they choose, right? You are such a formidable Poetess, you should be in top spots consistently. I just have a quaint sense of humor about them. ))) Emotionally, poets get run over too often. I only had one n/a. But placed in all contests. I detest honorable mention. LOL. I mean, to me it says "LOSER". I honestly think anyone in a contest is a brave soul. And the only award should be a PARTICIPATION AWARD for each. Nothing more. No nooses, for this one. Damian, my lost one. I had thought you cast me out to see like a dead fish.-)) that does happen here, )))anyway..thank you DAMO for commenting. I thought I was alone on this..,guess not. I will be in touch more often. Especially, since we are on the same track. Yaaa! The wise here do not play, Hang the Poet. We could play funnier games. That would be grand. Damian, please excuse my intrusion on your comment to Pangie, but I agree with you. I laugh and shake my head at the arrogance. It's best to ignore them.
