Solo Flight

It gave me a thrill
To fly a plane
Alone in the sky

Since I was a kid
Always loved planes
Knew someday I’d fly

Growing up I did
Kites and gliders
And then model planes

Then out of college
Took the giant step
Flying the real things

My instructor Jim
Knew how to teach
Everything went good

He stepped from the plane
To my surprise
“Solo, if you would”

I can still recall
How scared I was
Taxing away

OK, this is it
I’m on my on
I’ll solo today

I took off gently,
As I was taught
Now I’m in the air

Everything Jim said
Went through my head
Got to land down there

Turned onto base and
Then on final
Runway was in sight

I dropped down some flaps
Held the nose up
Landed my first flight
