Solemnity
Walk with apt strides down those tricky stairs
And keep your eyes a few steps ahead of you,
Wave at friends without forgetting your legs;
On mightier thoughts stay focused and true.
Ignore the clamor of howling fools
But take note of the suffering around,
Resist the urge to join the raucous crowds
By keeping your eyes glued to the ground.
You’ll never see all the beautiful gals in the world,
So why entertain collision with some oncoming car
While you stare and marvel at the few around you?
Appreciate the artwork and let your thoughts roam far.
Let not the charismatic preacher take you astray
By buying you into his self-absorbed schedules
For Heaven’s honored when mortals respect time,
And angels minister to silent hearts bound to rules.
The honorable others – the trees and the birds,
Take their choruses and rhythms as food for soul;
Never have they uttered a single misplaced tune
For they sing to make your solemnity fit and whole.
