Sobriety

Mesmerized by silence
the maiden sips the chalice
dipping drink in pilonce
entertaining life without malice
indulgence fills the music
into the cup she holds
sifted in sobriety dousing with fluid
til the limitless path unfolds
to savor is her destruction
she must be careful of a fall
for the entirety of life's instruction
she'll learn to heed the call
maybe it will relinquish
the magic that it bids
and binding won't distinguish
between the garbage it rids
moreover this gift is freedom
but not ever to be free
the punishment is thrice beaten
will she refrain I guess we shall see

It is possible though hard, I have seen it achieved by a family member and she had been given up as a lost case, we were all proved wrong. Great poem about a problem of 'today'. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

This is one topic which needs to be dealt with an open mind and understanding, Angela. Staying away from drink, smoking or drugs for many is a daily struggle. ~ Best regards // paul

I gave up smoking cigarettes years ago. It was the hardest thing i'd ever done. I can imagine, an innocent sip, turning into a habitual nightmare. This is powerful poetry, Angela. To my Fav.

Fabulous and well penned. Unfortunately, with people penned in like pigs, the consumption of alcohol has risen. For one trying to stay sober, this must be a living hell.I have experience working with them for decades Some will never get sober, many will. There is also.falling off the wagon. Death for many. The liver cannot take that abuse.I know the uppity attitude non alcoholics have.it’s disgusting Sobriety is a gift from God. Alcoholics stay sober one day at a time. Pangie

One of the ways that people are able to successfully recover from addiction is through connection with others. Sadly many in our society with addictions are shunned and this compounds the issue. A well expressed piece that causes one to ponder the issue. Hugs Rick.

Life is not easy. This makes it even harder. All of us need help with one thing or the other. May we all find peace. Have a blessed day as you write away..............

Your poem gives voice to those who struggle to stay sober no matter how hard they try. Never easy as you so well articulate, Angela,---and as your ending line says--never for sure.

It takes courage and a healthy stance to stay sober. A friend of mine across the street died because she was not strong enough.
