So You Want To Become a Poet

So you want to become a poet, Before you have a crack at it, Before you try to fit, I give you these tips to help you become a hit. Read other poets by all means, But remember their dreams are not your dreams. Sometime poems come in streams, And sometimes they end up on the floor as paper reams. It is ok to write for yourself, And leave a poem unposted on the shelf. Making a correction, Can sometimes change a poems direction. Poetry is no different than other things in life, And overstating your case can sometimes result in strife. If you stick at it you will soon come to realize, The right mood gets one closer to the prize. Lastly, fun, Gives one a longer run.

Good advice! Given in an amusingly poetic manner, of course. I guess I do write for myself, mostly. It's nice if others enjoy what I wrote, but it's not necessary that they do! I did like this one, nice job.

Thanks Katharine, glad you liked it. I am taking my own advice and overstating my case less in poems and in my life. My family do not say "Too Much information Dad or my wife does not say 'you have made your point' as often. Regards David in NZ

I find that my poems which seem to be the best are the ones that come from deep within from a place of my spirit. I enjoyed reading the advice in this one. Thanks for sharing and for dropping by my page. Sara

Thanks Susan that means a lot. Most of my poems are written in my head before I get to the computer. I am often in the dark where they come from. Warm regards to and your family too. Our grandson turns 4 next Thursday the 2nd. He has an ear for language and is correcting me already when I don't use proper names or pronunciation. A bit scary really. Best regards David in NZ
