So Long To Philosophy and Theology

Marymount University is saying farewell to some storied majors
    including Art, English, Philosophy, Theology - and Math
  
  Artists will starve or survive, and Writers on AI can thrive
    Philosophy's rigors are lost on the West today
      Theology to moderns hasn't overmuch to say... 

  But Mathematics?! - the basis for physics
     not to mention ALL of computing
       ~ For her restoration, I am assuredly rooting!

Ha, ha! They also wiped out their English major. Math and English are the two subjects that the SAT tests. What does that tell you about the SAT's future?! lol.

The way education is going in this country is really disheartening. However, being a private institution, they can do what they want with their curriculum. I suspect enrollment will drop. very informative write, GW.

Actually, I expect enrollment will increase. These colleges have to become relevant in a hurry or they'e all going bye-bye. The 'liberally educated man or woman' is an an anachronism in today's society. Wokeness will also drop by the wayside, by the way... Amazingly enough

People want students to get some bang for their tuition bucks. Philosophers can charge $ 5 - $10 a person for 'reading palms.' Whooppee, it's tax-free! lol.

Why? I wish I was able to go to University, It opens the door to many opportunties for a more fullfilled life. I think the impotrance of education cannot be sressed enough.

To answer your question directly: None of these majors have more than a handful of students enrolled in them as majors anymore. Why? B/C you can't make a living with a degree in Philosophy or Theology. Sad fact of life. We live in a results-oriented, utilitarian age, and the 'fat gets cut.' Myself, I was an English major at Dartmouth College. Out of my entering class of 820 freshman, there were over 200 English majors. (1968-1972). Can you believe it? It was the most popular major. Economics was #2. (Marymount is also cutting Economics. lol). There you have it. ~ gw
