Notes About The Poem

Proverbs 14:12:
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."

======================

Skyglass

the birds don't
break on panes of sky—
they break on the
illusion of passage

the threshold of the unseen

on thinking
glass is sky
on faith
that what seems
open is

***

does heaven
kill by being there
or seeming to be?

transparency is
also trap

the open is what kills them

Dear Daniel, I relish the depth and breadth of this thought-proving, beautifully poetic poem. What is and what is not is based on what we want to believe is true, not on what is necessarily true. What is reality, what is illusion? To a parched desert traveler the mirage of water is real until they realize it's not. "does heaven/kill by being there/or seeming to be?" This could take volumes to explore.. I love it! Your golden pen creates another masterwork. Warmest wishes, my poet friend.. ~Susan

Dear Daniel, once again your have reached into the depths poetry to birth another experience on which to ponder! What a gift you have. By the position of the bird, not on it's side, I wonder if it is only stunned or ducking for cover. And, only faintly do we see a figure with a gun mirrored in the window. I have never seen a bird break a windowpane. Much to ponder. Thank you for sharing you poetic gift! Blessings of awakening and rebirth, dear friend.

Pensive write, stirred my thoughts. We are confident of our firm beliefs at our own peril. For example, at first I thought the bird was shot dead and the bb pierced the window. Truth may or not be transparent, ne'st pas? The "window of opportunity" may spell doom! Cheers Robert

K think Daniel that much depends on one's idea of just what heaven is! A wonderful thought provoking piece this is! You are indeed a master, I wish that I could approach such thoughts with as much grace as you do! Happy Thursday !

Yes, so sad when I have a bird fly into the window in our den. It happens frequently. I don't know exactly why but I always thought that it was that they did not know it was glass and not a fly through. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Ironic that you wrote this poem. A neighbor and I had been mourning miles of desert being torn up for new developments. We dreamt of alternatives, mirrored towers for housing spaced out, saving land for nature and wildlife yet reflecting nature and not clashing with is so much. After reading this, I see it as a bad idea for the birds. On another note, I'd personally rather fly in the hope of God and heaven. I have found much hope in Him and that all things will become new someday.

Such a pity that even birds must die.

Hello Victor, I hope you are enjoying your Autumn. Death is inevitable and it is sad to watch. I have had birds over the years crash into my windows and some break their neck and die. Others get up and fly away. Autumn Blessings, Victor, Daniel

Dearest Daniel, A very meaningful poem with strong message that leaves the reader wondering. I love your philosophical way of writing poems. I've been very busy but I will try to read and write as much as possible. Also, as you know me, I'm trying to digest the wisdom that my heartbreak left me :) With love and respect always, Anne

We are given so much to see that some cannot see eternity.

Dear Kim, I am so happy you see the deep part of my poem, and there is a whole spiritual component, and some believe they have the truth and crash into glass, and those who see the true sky. Autumn Blessings, Dear Kim, Daniel

The need to imagine a life force beyond its existence may be an illusion to hold onto and grapple with death and its finality...my first thought after reading your poem

Hello Frederic, I am grateful that you noticed aspects of the poem that I wanted to highlight. There are many illusions that seem to be the right way until we run into that glass wall before realizing the truth. Autumn Blessings, Frederic, Daniel
