Sidestep

Forgive me for not letting you in:
I wanted so badly to escape
This place that is in between
Those memories of the past
The uncertainty of the future

If only I knew then
that it would end up this way
I wouldn't step foot into the idea of love.
Not even close, not even when the fire within me rose

How could I let myself be so vulnerable
so plagued by a callous human being
bringing nothing of worth or gain
knowing only suffering and pain?
How did breaking apart become so easy?
Wasn’t my heart hard as steel?
