Should Be Asleep By Now

So I creep upstairs to tuck him in, should be asleep by now.

8 years old and 10 o'clock don't get on so well

but as I near the bedroom, something's very clear,

That little sod, he's wide awake, and hiding somewhere here.

'oh Samuel' i start to call, ' should be in bed by now'

'come on now this isn't fun, we don't want to have to row'

I hear a giggle from in his room, see bouncing on the bed!

The little monkey jumps straight down and runs past me instead.

'come on, you're being silly' 'should be in bed by now'

'oh, don't climb in the wardrobe' 'you, know you're not allowed'

I've had enough by now, I think, this is no child of mine.

Any other night he'd be asleep by five past nine.

I grab him as he passes 'should be in bed by now'

his tops pulled up over his face, as if to hide somehow

I pull back the covers and he leaps straight into bed

Grabs the cover, pulls it up, straight over his head.

I tuck him in and smile, 'should be asleep by now'

At least we got there in the end, and all is good and well

'I love you son, now go to sleep, it will be morning soon'

I stroke the back of his tiny head, and go to leave the room

'

'Its time to turn the lights off' 'should be asleep by now'

'check for monsters daddy, 'cos only you know how'

I sigh and smile and back I go to peer under the bed.

Anything to get my boy to rest his sleepy head.

I lift the duvet and give a sigh 'should be asleep by now'

I take a yawn and and take a peek and wipe my weary brow.

I little face looks at me, my heart is filled with dread

'Daddy, daddy, help me, There's someone in my bed'
